Pirates Claim Infielder/Outfielder Ronny Simon Off Waivers from Miami

The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed infielder/outfielder Ronny Simon off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Right-handed pitcher Tanner Rainey has been designated for assignment to make room for Simon on the 40-man roster.

The 25-year-old Simon began this season with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he hit .354 (17-for-48) with a double, two triples, one home run and nine RBI in 15 games before having his contract selected by Miami on April 20.

He hit .234 (11-for-47) with two doubles and five RBI in 19 games this season for the Marlins before being designated for assignment on May 30.

Simon is a .266 career hitter (544-for-2044) with 116 doubles, 27 triples, 66 home runs and 293 RBI in 558 games played in the minor leagues.

He was originally signed by Chicago (NL) as a non-drafted free agent on July 7, 2018.

Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster remains full.
